Maya Post Classic Period of Western Belize
Quite a number of archaeological excavations have
been carried out since the east quarter of the twentieth century in the Belize River Valley. Examples include those at Xunantunich, Cahal
Pech, Baking Pot, Ontanio, Blackman Eddy, as well as sites at El Pilar, Chaa Creek and Saturday Creek. Previously, reserarch was carried out
at other sites; for example, at Barton Ramie, on the Belize Valley, and at Negroman Tipu. From the data gathered, it has been deduced that
there was “a viable Postclassic period” in the Belize Valley. The data produced indicates a good deal of Terminal Classic and even Postclassic
occupations.
